Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

PDT is a non-invasive method used to treat AKs. It involves a two-part process. First, a medication called aminolevulinic acid is applied to AK lesions and some of its surrounding skin. This medication is left to incubate on the treatment area and gets converted into a light-sensitive agent when it penetrates the skin. Second, we turn on a red lamp, which activates the light-sensitive agent and destroys the precancerous lesions. PDT is an effective way to treat large areas and target multiple AK lesions at once. The treatment makes your skin more sensitive to light so it’s important to apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure on the treated areas for approximately 48 hours following treatment.

Desert Sky Dermatology offers two light source treatment options.
