Actinic Keratosis

Actinic Keratosis (AK) are single or multiple, dry, rough scaly lesions that occur on the habitually sun-exposed skin of adults. They begin to appear in adulthood and are more common in men and those with fairer complexions. Outdoor workers are particularly more susceptible, particularly in the Desert Southwest. As dermatologists in Gilbert AZ we see frequently see patients with Actinic Keratosis.

AKs are best described as “pre-cancers,” because without treatment, the risk of transformation to skin cancer is high. Sun protection and avoidance are important in the management of AK. Other treatments include:

  • Cryosurgery with liquid Nitrogen
  • 5-Fluorouracil cream
  • Imiquimod cream
  • Ingenol mebutate gel
  • Topical retinoids
  • Chemical (acid) peels
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Laser procedures
